Since many people are not familiar with these wonders of
nature, here is a little information about hard-shell gourds:
- Hard-shell gourds belong to the “Cucurbitaceae” family.
More recognizable members of this family include
cucumbers, pumpkins and zucchinis. However, the
gourds that are used for art purposes have a very hard
shell (much like wood). They are durable and, once
sealed, will last for years.
- Gourd fragments have been found in Peru that date back
to 10,000 B.C..
- Gourds were used by many early civilizations as
containers and vessels.
- Gourds were used to create musical instruments by
many ancient cultures.
No two gourds are exactly alike. They vary in size, shape and
thickness, and a lot of cleaning (both the inside and the
outside) is required before beginning an art project.
It will take, on average, about an hour just to clean one gourd
well.
Although two gourd art designs may be similar, they will never
be exactly alike -- every gourd is unique.
